Questions? We're here to help!

Here are some of the most common questions we receive. Still have questions? We'd love to connect.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

why is there a need?

Many families are doing everything right. Applying for statewide scholarships, budgeting carefully, making sacrifices, and still coming up short.

  • Existing statewide scholarships don’t cover full private school tuition
  • Many families are waitlisted when statewide programs reach capacity
  • Students often need additional tutoring or support
  • Some families are navigating new educational paths without access to funding

who can apply for a scholarship?

Families with K-12 students seeking support for educational expenses may apply.

This includes:

  • Private school students
  • Homeschool students
  • Students in co-ops or tutoring programs
  • Public school students needing additional academic support

If I Already receive another scholarship (like step Up), can i still apply?

Yes, you can still apply. Many families have unmet financial need even after receiving other scholarships.

We help cover those gaps where there's still a real need.

how is good soil different from step up?

The Good Soil Scholarship Fund is not here to replace programs like Step Up For Students. We exist to serve families who still have unmet needs.

Step Up provides scholarships to families across Florida. Good Soil is a local nonprofit focused on supporting families in our own community.

When statewide programs reach capacity or don’t fully cover a family’s needs, Good Soil helps bridge the gap by providing need-based support as funds are available.

how did good soil begin?

Over the past few years, our family has experienced firsthand the impact that educational scholarships can have. Our children received support while they were in public school and now within a homeschool co-op.

As we shared our experiences, we began hearing similar stories from families across our community. Many were navigating different educational paths and simply needed support.

But when statewide scholarship applications opened earlier this year, the demand quickly exceeded available funding. Families we personally know missed out simply because the opportunity filled so quickly.

In a short period of time, we had multiple conversations with families in the same situation. While we were grateful for the support our own family had received, those conversations stayed with us.

We kept coming back to the same questions:

Is there anything we could do to help meet this need locally?

What would it look like for a community to come alongside families who need additional support?

Through prayer, conversations, and digging into what this could actually look like, The Good Soil Scholarship Fund began.

Our hope is simple: to connect families who need support with people who want to help.

Why "Good Soil"?

The name "Good Soil" comes from the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8. In this passage, the seed represents the Word of God, and the soil reflects the condition of the heart.

“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” - Luke 8:15 (NIV)

While this parable speaks about spiritual growth, it also represents how essential a strong foundation is for perseverance and bearing fruit.

We believe families thrive when they are supported and equipped.

Our hope is to be a small part of providing the support families need to build a strong foundation.

Are scholarships only for Christian schools?

Good Soil was founded with a Christ-centered mission, and our work is guided by Biblical values.

Families may use scholarships with a variety of approved educational providers, including private schools, co-ops, curriculum providers, tutoring services, and hybrid models.

All providers are reviewed through an approval process to ensure funds are used responsibly for educational purposes.

does good soil impact public school funding?

Good Soil is funded entirely by private donations, not public-school dollars.

Our heart is to support families in the educational setting they’re in, including tutoring and other academic support for public school students.

We’re simply here to help where there’s a need.

Who runs good soil, and where do you operate?

The Good Soil Scholarship Fund is led by a local board of directors and a founding team with backgrounds in finance, business and operations, nonprofit experience, and community leadership.

We are based in Volusia County, Florida, currently serving families in our local community. We hope to reach more families each year and expand as God allows.

How does Good Soil ensure a fair review process?

Each application is reviewed through a structured process designed to be fair and consistent.

We consider factors such as financial need, family circumstances, and any existing scholarship support. Applications are reviewed using a standardized rubric to ensure decisions are not based on personal relationships or subjective opinions.

To ensure fairness, applications are reviewed by an independent team rather than any one individual.

Scholarships are awarded based on demonstrated need and available funding.

how are scholarships funded?

Scholarships are made possible through the generosity of individuals, families, local community partners and grant support.

Each contribution directly supports a student.

We award need-based scholarships as funds are available, with payments made directly to schools and approved providers.

How can i support good soil?

There are a few simple ways to support students and families:

  • Pray for the families we serve and the growth of this work
  • Share the mission with others who may want to get involved
  • Give to support scholarships for students in need
